Lesson Assignment: 9-26-08

You've just completed the first face-to-face discussion with your literature circle of the book you're now reading. Now, REFLECT on the first part of the book--on your ideas and responses you captured in your reading journal and on the discussion you had with your group by completing the following three tasks:
  1. Comment to this post: reflect on the success of your literature circle and your contribution to the discussion. How successful was your discussion? How deep into the text did your group dig? How did you, personally, contribute to the success of the discussion? In what areas does the group need to improve to have a better quality discussion next time? Before commenting, review the discussion checklist (click open to read document). **To comment, scroll to the bottom of this post and click the tiny print that says 52 Comments (or however many comments there are at the moment). A pop-up box will appear. Type in your comment, and when prompted, use your gmail account info to log in.
  2. Publish a post to your blog: share one interesting thread of your face-to-face conversation. Be sure to choose a meaningful, insightful bit to share. Explain how the particular portion relates to the book, and be sure to elaborate--to thoroughly explain.
  3. Read and comment on at least one classmate's post: You may read a post written by someone in your literature circle or by someone from another group. Keep in mind these tips (click open to read) for writing a meaningful comment. To locate your classmates' blogs, check out the sidebar of this blog.

  2. In my opinion, I thought that our literature circle was pretty successful. All of us had read to page 200, so there was a lot to talk about. We each contributed to our discussion by doing all of our connections, questions and drawings. All three of us are alike on our views and beliefs so we all relate to one other easily. I thought that I contributed by writing deep-thought questions and going deeper than outlining the story in my doodle. If I was to choose something our group needed to improve on it would be staying on task. All three of us have many of the same interests, so it is easy for us to get off topic and have personal discussions. -alexd

  4. The literature circle about eclipse was pretty productive but we got off topic once. I contributed to my lit circle by sharing my connections questions and sketch. Next time we could dig a little deeper into the discussion and not get off topic.

  5. My lit circle containing Alex, and Angela was very successful. We all read to about page 25. We dug into the text alright I guess. We all dug into the text about Boo though. I personally contributed to my group by making two very good connections and questions. My visual picture probably could have been better in my case. Alex’s visual was very good. In my opinion I think if we could have read more of the passage, we could have gone deeper into the text itself.

  6. I am reading Touching Spirit Bear. In our Lit Circle, our discussion today was not very intriguing. First of all, we have not read very much so we couldn't get very deep into the text. I contributed to discussion by telling what points of the book that I connected to. I had several connections, on paper and in my head. Our group needs to improve on staying on task. We will start talking about the book, then we'll stray. It's difficult to talk about the book that way. We also need to read more into the book. Both literally and physically.

  7. Our lit circles were very successful. Even though there wasnt a decided page number, we all read to the same page so we all new what we were talking about. We all had good connections and we could really relate to the book. T-rep

  8. Our lit circle went pretty good. We all were on the same page we knew exactly what we were talkin about. We asked questions and we answered them, well tried to anyways... ())~~%~~~Ben M

  9. Our Discussion was fairly successful. We each shared our connections and explained them thoroughly to the group. We each discussed our pictures and asked our questions for each of the other members to ponder. I contributed by sharing my picture, connections, and questions. Also, I contributed by relating to a few of the connections made by a fellow group memeber. One way me have a better discussion is if the group didn't read a head so much...which may be a good thing.

  10. Our lit circle was pretty okay, I mean nothing to write home about, but still okay. I belive to have a better lit circle discussion ummmm i say maybe if we read the book we can talk more about the book and seeing as nobody really read that far in to the book i think we all brought a little somthing to the book

  11. Our lit circle on Eclipse was pretty successful. We all talked about our questions and connections and went pretty deep. We stayed on task the whole time. I shared my picture and then talked about my questions and connections. We could work on discussing the questions and giving more feedback to them and the connections. One person, however, could not share his visual or connections with me because he read ahead and drew his picture about something I have not read, yet. He will have to be sure that he will only make connections and visuals from the chunk of the book we were supposed to read.

  12. In my opinion our group did good with reading and discussing our book. All of us read thru page 133. All three of us thought that our book was boring and a waste of time so far. If we had to improve on something it would be staying on task. CHAD G

  13. Our literature circle was slow to start today because we were not quite sure what to discuss and we were not all at the same point in the book. However Mrs. Huff came over and helped us and that really stimulated our discussion. I was further ahead than most of the other kids in the group so I was to help a little in telling them what to expect. I think that the quality of our discussion can be greatly improved next time if everyone will have read to the same page, that we know what the other people are talking about and we can share our points of view on what is going on.

  14. My lit circle was pretty successful with Hallie, Jonathon, Jamie and Katey. We discussed the book and how we related to it. One thing i thought was interesting was that the book reminded us of a book that we read in 5th grade called Hatchet. We could have got more detailed and probably need to stay more focused too. We all read to about the same part in the book so we couldn't predict what was going to happen next yet.

  15. Today our lit. Circle was not good at all. Some had read a lot of the book and others had read very little. This hindered our group greatly because we couldn’t talk about our book because we were on different parts. Next time we meet we should all be on the same page…no pun intended.

  16. I am reading the book touching spirt bear with jessica, katey, jamie and jonathan. I think our lit circle was pretty succsessful. We got off topic a few times but we always end up on the text again. I think the book is very interesting and i showed that interest in sharing my connections and visualization.

  18. My lit circle is reading The Chocolate War. I think the discussion was pretty successful, but mostly in describing the book to me. I haven't read very far into the book, so none of it makes any sense to me. It would help it our group was more together in the reading, we are all in different parts of the book so its kind of hard to discuss it without someone giving away some of the story because they have read farther.

  19. Our lit circle on The Chocolate War was okay, most of our people didn’t read very many pages so there wasn’t really much to discuss. We did talk about some part of the text though, and some parts that what we thought were confusing. I read to page 35, I should have read a little bit more, but I help by throwing in some helpful words to help better understand the book a little more. I think it would be better when we read a little more, so we can a better discussion, but overall it wasn’t a horrible lit circle, we just need to read the book more.

  20. In the group that is reading chocolate war. the discussion went bad. there was not really any huge discussions threads that went on. i have not read enough of the book to understand it. the things that will make it better next time is to 1.read the book and 2. have more ppl understand it and be able to reflect on the ideas so we can make connections and form questions and see images

  21. The book The Beast is a book i can really connect to. The group im in did good at the start then later we went way off topic. But since most of us can connect with the book very well it should be easy to get through next time.

  22. So--it seems a bit of the dysfunctional group problem today was my fault. Sorry for not allowing groups to get together to agree on assigned readings. We'll do better next week.

Other than making sure we ALL READ, we need to work on staying on topic, not DIGRESSING. Perhaps, we'll try a poker tip next time! I'll explain next week.

  23. Our group did ok we were all tired and didnt dwell as deep into the book as you would hope but in all for the amount that weve read i think it was a good discussion. And i would say that we each contributed an equal share of the information.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Our group discussed the book and everything very well today. We also talked about connections in the world that have to do with our book as well. I mentioned how the book reminded me of a movie series called underworld. I think next week time we could improve by letting more people talk instead of just a few of us.

  25. Our lit circle was very successful. Even though, two people were missing from the group, Sam and I had a good discussion. We both had good connections to the book. We both related well to the book. We both love the book, which made the dicussion better. -RACHEL =]

  26. My lit circle, which includes Shelby Ward, Dillon Carpenter, Jonathan Edmonds, and me, is reading Shooter by Walter Dean Myers. Surprisingly, our lit circle went extremely well today. Everyone participated, and read the material we were supposed to have read for today’s meeting. Our discussions stayed on topic the whole time. Each and every person brought question's we could all relate and go in depth with. I’m looking forward to our next meeting!

  27. Today in our lit circle we had two of our members misssing. We still had a very sucessful meeting. Both me and Rachel are enjoying our book and had good connections and questions. Hopfully next time with our whole group here our group will be even better!

  29. Our lit group is Kambri, Dillon, Jonathan and me, and we are reading Shooter by Walter Dean Myers. We actually had a pretty good discussion today. We all read what we were supposed to, asked questions about the reading, and had our own connections to talk about. For the most part we think the book is okay, its kinda weird but interesting. We all are curious of what will happen.

  31. well our lit circle discussion today was not bad but it wasnt very good either. The author of my book didnt have my attention at all every time he started to get good and deep in the book, he would jump into a different subject. the book was really bad. And we both hated it so it made it kind of bad. But there also was some good questions. @l@n

  32. My group, Kambri,Dillon, and Shelby, is reading Shooter, we had a good discussion in our group. We all talked about our connections and asked questions about them.
Other than the first few minutes, we had a really really good discussion. We are really wondering what happens at the end.

  33. Our discussion was very successful! Our group, Dillon, Kambri, Shelby and John is reading the book shooter by Walter dean Myers, each of our members contributed a good amount of information from questions to connection, and very interesting drawings. Our group dug into the text. Our level three questing were very detailed in there asking. You could say that our group dug deep into the layers of the book shooter. I contributed to the book by reading what I was suppose to read, doing the connections, questions, and drawing a picture that reflected on a time in the book. I shared my connections and got the group going in a good direction in the discussion of one of my layer 3 questions. Our group could improve by having more into detail connections to the book. Besides that, I am looking forward to finishing the book and our next lit circle discussion.

  34. Ok, so yeah, my book is Curque du Freak. We had a good lit circle.
One of our topics was as follows: What if the super-natural was real? The bible talks about how some people were possessed (back in the day) I'm not saying that I beleive it is, just trying to give you guys something to think/talk about. Later guys! Doug

  35. Today during out lit circle we discussed the book Storm Thief. We mostly talked about the level 2 and level 3 questions. We decided that Dustin had one of the best ones, which is going to be stated in his comment. Then we focused on the texts, and the picture. We came up with some pictures that had some good imagination. Over all in our 7 minute discussion, we decided at the end that we had a pretty good discussion but we will definitely try to have a better one next time.

  36. Our discussion of We Beat the Street went well today but it was very short because the book did not lend itself to very much digging. The books seems very elementary in that it laid the moral out for us. We didn’t really have to work very hard to find it. We all read and understood the book.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Today in our Lit. Circle, we discussed a few topics about our book Crackback. One interesting thread of discussion was when we were talking about if Miles, the main character, was playing for himself, or playing to fulfill his father's dreams that he had ruined due to an injury in college. We decided that he was playing to fulfill his father's dreams, because he is the only one that ever pushes Miles to play harder and get better.

  38. Today in our lit cirlcle we didnt really talk much, but we still had some very interesting conversations. My group wasnt feeling very well today but Im sure we will have a lot more interesting conversations to come

    ReplyDelete
  39. Today in our lit circle we discussed mainly our level 2 and level 3 questions. We all decided that this wasnt the best book we have ever read, but we all read to where were suppose to. We discussed the text and the pictures we drew . Overall we all decided this was a medicore dicussion. One of the level 3 questions was "Have you ever felt alone where your up against all odds? Like a bird flying in a storm over the sea with sudden gust of winds smacking into your body blowing you in every direction. When your only chance of survival is your determantion to move on and hopefully find land.

  40. Mostly in the the lit circle was discussed the outer things of the book deeper things were brushed apon but never really taken with real reason in mind. The text was not a real big source for what was being talked about but was referred too. So I guess if we were giving this a grade I would give it a 78.

  41. Our lit circle is reading Sunrise Over Fallujah. In our discussion today we talked about how if Bush had never sent soldiers to Iraq where would we be today? The discussion went great, it would be even better if we had more time *wink wink*. There so many topics to talk about when it comes to war.

    ReplyDelete
  42. In our discussion a lot was said about underlying themes and moral values. Where would we be if we didn't invade iraq? The author wanted to illustrate to readers that its not only americans that are dying, its them too. Women, children, elderly, all pay.

    ReplyDelete
  43. In our lit circle, we are reading Sunrise Over Fallujah and we discused a hole bunch of things. the main topic was our reasoning for being over in iraq. What if we didnt go over seas? what if we had just bombed them and left it be? what if... what if... what if... it was a good discussion and the only problem was that we didnt really have enough time to get into anything very deeply.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Mainly in the literature circle the group disscussed how we could relate to the character in our book and his cancer. the book was often left behind as we went on to tell some of our stories that related to the book.

    ReplyDelete
  45. todays lit disscusion was for the most part astute and succesful although not all the members of the group were present and up to date on the reading so we mostly talked about what has happened so far and how it relates to our lives and what connections we had made so far.

    ReplyDelete
  46. When ever my group discusses our book which is Fever 1793,we started with a question and we would talk about whats the situation and how it hapened and how are they going to solve it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Our discussion posed a lot of second and third level questions which inspired a conversation that lasted for the rest of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In the lit circle we talked more about connections then we did anything else. We also discussed are pictures that we drew and what we liked about the book. We mostly just talked about how we related to the book.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Our lit circle is reading brians winter, in our disscussion we talked about how brian is trying to survive alone in the woods, and how many people are also, just in everyday life. Many people are are trying to get byon minimum wage, with gas prices at a r record high, many become poor or homeless, and struggle very much through these hard times and they have to try to survive.

  51. In my lit circle we are reading the book Cut.I find it to be interesting also different. But in our conversation on the book we found that our out looks on it were very different. There are five different girls in this book and they all have a different set of problems so our circle was constinly having the same thing to say about the same thing.Like how Debbie was talking about every one else probems

  52. my lit gourp we are reading the book cut its a really deep book thatt has alot of feeling. there is five girls i nthis book that all have different issues and deal with them in different ways. one connectone we talked about was that people belive if one talks about their problums they might feel better . sadly most people hide there problums and keep their problums down inside with all frustation.

In my lit group we were reading The Beast, when we were reading The Beast we were discussing and analyzing for few minutes about the passage of the book(The message of book for us), each books we read there is a lesson for us to learn . While we are reading a book we are comparing about the world(people) and ourself to that book. Like Gaby had a dream to be something in her future, later Gaby had lost her dream, hopes, future. She has lost her way in a fragile, desperate world. Some of this happens to us. And it got me interested.
